Now superstash has gone to paid, my big issue at the moment is not being able to customise or design the homepage. I would like to be able to change sections, add some colour, images, backgrounds etc...

What's the end goal for the home page apart from showing most recent posts?

The end goal is to have a basic page builder for homepage and other pages as well. I'll try to create a set of components which you can use to build your pages.

If anyone have any ideas just let me know and I'll consider it.

Piotr Kulpinski: I might put something together later on but for start, it would be nice if we could build a homepage like Superstash has and then query the categories, listings and blog posts with separate sections.

Even simple customisations like changing the resources from being most recent to most rated or featured resources might be nice

I'm aware it's a pain in the ass and it's been the most requested feature in Chipmunk as well. I'll address this as soon as I can, once I finish the custom post type and custom fields functionality.
